The Buddha emphasized the learning of discourses uttered by him, and not by others.  


In Apaṇṇaka , Majjhima Nikāya 60, the Buddha said : 

"If you have no satisfactory teacher, then take this sure Dhamma and practice it. 

For the Dhamma is sure, and when it is rightly undertaken it will be to your welfare and happiness for a long time."

Tidlig buddhisme når os idag, via Theravadabuddhismen hvor vi forsøger at følge den historiske Buddha's anvisninger.
Når man har stor ærbødighed overfor en lærer pga. dennes helt specielle visdom og positive kvaliteter, så vil stærk loyalitet naturligt følge overfor denne, og dennes lære.
Buddha sagde som noget af det sidste i sit liv :
"Whatever doctrine and discipline taught and made known by me, will be your teacher when I am gone.
Den doktrin og disciplin der omtales er Dhamma - Vinaya, som var den benævnelse Buddha selv brugte for sin lære, og det monastiske samfunds regler.
Andetsteds omtaler Buddha Suttaerne som "Saddhamma", der betyder sand dhamma.
Der er tre typer af Buddhaer eller oplyste.
Den ene er en Arahant der underviser andre; den anden er en såkaldt "tavs Buddha", der opnår oplysning, men ikke lærer fra sig.
Den tredje type af Buddha er en Samma-sam-Buddha, (selvoplyst Buddha) som er en helt særlig og enestående Buddha, som kun fødes med uhyre lange mellemrum for at genopdage og undervise i Dhammaen, når denne er uddød i verden.
Denne unikke type Sama-sam Buddha, er hvad den historiske Buddha var.
Da vi endnu har Buddhas lære i verden kan vi forstå at der siden Gotama, ikke kan have eksisteret en lærer med evner og indsigt som ham.
Af disse grunde gør vi klogt i at lytte til og lære hans dhamma. 
Buddha sagde følgende om fremtiden, i Ani Sutta. :
"Monks, there once was a time when the Dasarahas had a large drum called 'Summoner.'
Whenever Summoner was split, the Dasarahas inserted another peg in it, until the time came when Summoner's original wooden body had disappeared and only a conglomeration of pegs remained.

In the same way, in the course of the future there will be monks who won't listen when discourses that are words of the Tathagata — deep, deep in their meaning, transcendent, connected with emptiness — are being recited.
They won't lend ear, won't set their hearts on knowing them, won't regard these teachings as worth grasping or mastering.
But they will listen when discourses that are literary works — the works of poets, elegant in sound, elegant in rhetoric, the work of outsiders, words of disciples — are recited.
They will lend ear and set their hearts on knowing them.

They will regard these teachings as worth grasping & mastering.
"In this way the disappearance of the discourses that are words of the Tathagata — deep, deep in their meaning, transcendent, connected with emptiness — will come about.
"Thus you should train yourselves:
'We will listen when discourses that are words of the Tathagata — deep, deep in their meaning, transcendent, connected with emptiness — are being recited.

We will lend ear, will set our hearts on knowing them, will regard these teachings as worth grasping & mastering.'
That's how you should train yourselves."
Vi bestræber os derfor på at lære og efterleve Buddha Gotamas ord som de er overleveret til os i Suttaerne. 
Med venlig hilsen
